Building on group development models of Bennis and Shepard, Bion, Tuckman and others, and
based on her own empirical research, Susan Wheelan proposed an "integrated" model of group
development (Wheelan, 1990; Wheelan, 1994). The Integretad Model of Group Development,
IMGD, takes the perspective that groups achieve maturity or higher states as they continue to
work together rather than simply go through stages of activity. Reaching a new stage means that
the group has created a new plattform to stand on when they cooperate. Based on this model,
Wheelan has created and validated both a Group Development Observation System (GDOS) and
a Group Development Questionnaire (GDQ). The GDQ has been scientifically validated and is
used to survey group members perception of their group's developmental state (Wheelan &
Hochberger, 1996). Her academic work has mostly been carried out as a professor at Temple
university in Philadelphia. Numerous doctoral thesises and research articles has been written
based on the use of either GDOS or GDQ and today around 100 research articles using the GDQ
has been published.
